Getting braces is one of the best ways to absolutely transform your confidence. Braces straighten your teeth and make taking care of them a lot easier, as well. If you’re unsure what getting braces is all about, read on to find out.

Initial Consultation

The first step in your orthodontic treatment is an initial complimentary consultation. This appointment allows your orthodontist to get to know you, your history, and your goals. During this consultation, you’ll talk with your orthodontist about your dental history and any problems you’re worried about. Your orthodontist will also take this opportunity to complete any x-rays or exams that are needed before you can begin your treatment. You’ll then work with them to decide on the best treatment option for you and create a personalized treatment plan. This consultation also allows you to discuss the cost of your treatment and consider any financial aid options.

Treatment Period

After you’ve decided upon a treatment plan with your orthodontist, the treatment can begin. Your first appointment after your consultation will be to install your braces. If you choose to have Invisalign instead, you will be shown how to use these aligners properly. You will then schedule regular orthodontist appointments every 4-8 weeks for the duration of your treatment. The treatment time typically ranges from 18-36 months. However, the timeline will vary based on the extent of your orthodontic needs.

During this time, it’s important to take good care of your teeth and your braces. Don’t eat things like hard or chewy candy to avoid breaking your brackets, and remember to brush your teeth after each meal. This will help ensure that your treatment is successful.

Removal and Upkeep

Once your treatment is complete, you’ll be able to finally remove your braces and enjoy your new smile. You’ve likely been looking forward to this day since your treatment first began, so it’s important to make sure that your new smile will last for the rest of your life. Your braces will have straightened your teeth and realigned your jaw. However, if you take no further action to keep your teeth healthy, everything will go back to where they were before. It’s important to regularly wear your retainer and continue to brush and floss your teeth every day to ensure that they remain healthy and straight.

Getting braces gives you the chance to significantly improve not only your appearance, but your oral health as well. Learning more about the process can make it seem less overwhelming and help you become better prepared. If you have any questions, contact Farley Orthodontics today!
